About us

Montpelier is an autonomous, evangelical church.

Autonomous

We are self governing, and do not have any denominational governing body.

We are partners in the Southside Family of Churches.

We maintain links with other churches in Purley through Purley and Kenley Churches Together and  in Croydon through Croydon Christian Forum.

We are members of the Evangelical Alliance and accept its Basis of Faith.  We accept the great creeds of the church e.g. The Apostles' CreedThe Nicene Creed. We believe it was Jesus intention to create unity, more an organic unity than an organisational unity:

"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you." (John 17:20-21)

Evangelical

Jesus said:

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Matthew 28:18-20

We are evangelical. We want to share the good news about Jesus with our local community and more widely by supporting missionaries and mission organisations

Church

Jesus said:

"I will build my church"

Church is not simply a building. The church is a body of people who follow Jesus. In the bible the church is represented as a body - the body of Christ, the physical presence of Jesus today. The church is global as followers of Jesus gather to meet across the world.

Montpelier Church as a body of people who follow Jesus has existed since the mid 1920's.

This body meets and God promises to be there with them. We welcome everyone to learn and share with us.

(Montpelier Church building in Biddulph Road, South Croydon (near Purley Oaks) was built in 1929.)

What is the glue that has kept it together, and will keep it going?

Simply a faith in Jesus that a local church, as a body of people, in action is the way He wishes to be represented until He returns.

Love God

Live a life of love
